News and Insights For Owners and Fans of Amazon.com’s New Kindle Wireless eBook Reader

Still A Wait for Kindle

Amazon.com is still not promising any particular time for delivery of Kindles.  At its website, it suggests that customers order Kindle now to reserve their place in line.

Amazon says its working hard to manufacture Kindles as quickly as possible and are prioritizing orders on a first come, first served basis.

At this point, people who are interested in a date certain for Kindle delivery have eBay to rely on, but must pay a premium for the ability to get their Kindle sooner rather than later.

  • Although it’s now after Christmas (when you’d expect there’d be more Kindles on the market), “Buy It Now” prices are still high on eBay.  There is only one “Buy It Now” Kindle available at eBay – for $999.  That’s quite a bit higher than the $399 price that Amazon.com is charging — although Amazon.com does have a delay with deliveries.

  • Amazon.com is not specifying any particular delivery time for Kindles on its web site.  It suggests customers order and get in line for a Kindle.  Aside from the now-shrinking number of Kindles on eBay (post-Christmas), getting “in line” at Amazon.com is the major way to get your hands on a Kindle at this point.

  • With Christmas almost here, the number of Kindles on eBay has shrunk greatly.  Right now there are only ten Kindles at auction and the lowest “Buy It Now” price is $1,000.   It will be interesting to see what happens to Kindle pricing on eBay after Christmas — when demand will presumably be less and Amazon will be shipping more Kindles.

  • Looks like Kindle’s are holding their own on eBay.  Right now you can get one on a “Buy It Now” basis for $825.  That’s still quite a premium over the regular $399 purchase price at Amazon.com — but there’s no wait involved.

  • At the moment, it looks like the cheapest, “for sure” purchase you can make of a Kindle is as an eBay “Buy It Now” deal.  The least expensive offer appears to be this one going for $748.50.
